چکیده

Rework that is often experienced in construction projects is primarily caused by errors made during the design process. Factors that contribute to design errors are identified and used to design and develop a systems dynamics model, which is used to simulate a number of practical scenarios that can be used to reduce design errors and rework. The DEsign and COnstruction REwork Minimisation (DECOREM) management model presented in this paper can enable design and project managers to better understand the process of design documentation and how design errors occur in construction projects.

The Impact of Design Rework on Construction Project Performance

Rework in construction development projects can significantly degrade project cost and schedule performance. In a typical construction development project which involves design and construction, rework in the construction phase could increase construction cost by 10%-15% of the contract price (Burati. 1992, Josephson & Hammerlund 1999, Love & Li 2000). The proportion of money and time spent on ...

Reducing rework and increasing the civil projects quality, through Total Quality Management (TQM), by using the concept of building information modeling (BIM)

One of the important problems in the field of Construction Industry is ‘rework’. It affects time, costs, quality, and almost every criteria of project success. As a result of rework and ineffective use of resources and materials in the workshops, there is always a considerable loss of resources, materials, investments, and workforce-time. Designing and planning through full awareness of clients...

An optimization-based model for maximizing the benefits of fast-track construction activities

Fast-track construction projects have become more popular in recent years in response to growing industry demand. By allowing downstream construction activities to start with incomplete information from upstream design activities, fast-tracking (through overlapping) allows for shorter project duration at the expense of potential rework. This leaves practitioners with the challenge of determinin...

An Optimization Model for Maximizing the Benefits of Fast-tracking Construction Projects

Fast-track construction projects have become more popular in recent years in response to growing industry demand. By allowing a downstream activity to start with incomplete information from upstream activities, fast-tracking allows for shortening the project duration at the expense of an increased likelihood of rework. This leaves practitioners with the challenge of determining the optimal fast...

Economic Production Quantity in Reworkable Production Systems with Inspection Errors, Scraps and Backlogging

The classical economic production quantity (EPQ) model is a well-known and commonly used inventory control technique. Common assumptions in this model are that all units produced are of perfect quality and shortage is not allowed, since in practice shortage, non-conforming product or scrap items are possible, these assumptions will underestimate the actual required quantity. The objective of th...
